Hunterston B is a nuclear power station located in North Ayrshire, Scotland. The station operated from 1976 until 2022, after which both reactors were successfully defuelled.
On 1 April 2026, Hunterston B became the first station within EDF Energy's Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor fleet to be formally relicensed to Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS), who will decommission the site on behalf of the UK government.
Following the completion of decommissioning, the site will enter into a period of care and maintenance.
Having examined the evidence provided by EDF, we are satisfied that appropriate action has been taken in response to the improvement notice.
Mike Finnerty, ONR's Chief Executive and Chief Nuclear Inspector, has signed the documentation to grant a new site licence to Nuclear Restoration Services, which will assume full responsibility as the licensee of Hunterston B with effect from 1 April 2026.
The notice was issued after workers failed to ensure that electrical cabling was deployed safety while undertaking work in one of the facilities on the site.
