Electrical safety improvements made at Hunterston B

EDF Energy (EDF) has successfully complied with an improvement notice issued following an electrical cabling incident at its Hunterston B site in Ayrshire, Scotland.

Since the notice was issued, EDF has implemented several improvements to ensure that all 415V portable equipment at the site is appropriately constructed, maintained, tested and controlled. The licensee has also strengthened its risk assessment processes and improved its arrangements for the supervision of work on electrical systems.

Having examined the evidence provided by EDF, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is satisfied that appropriate action has been taken in response to the notice. ONR welcomes the positive engagement shown by the site and the steps taken to address the identified shortfalls.

The notice was served under the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974, Section 2 (General duties of employers to their employees) and the Electricity at Work Regulations, 1989, including Regulation 4 (Systems, work activities, protective equipment); Regulation 7 (Insulation, protection, and placing of conductors); Regulation 10 (Connections); and Regulation 14 (Work on or near live conductors).

On 1 April Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) will assume the role of licensee and take on full responsibility for overseeing the decommissioning of the site, making it the first of EDF's Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor (AGR) sites to move to NRS.
