Hinkley Point B

Background

Hinkley Point B is situated near Bridgwater, Somerset on the South coast of England.

The station was built between 1967 and 1975 and started generating electricity on 5 February 1976. It ceased generating electricity in 2022 and both reactors on the site have since been defueled.

On 1 October 2026, Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) assumed responsibility from EDF as the site licensee following approval from ONR. NRS will lead decommissioning work at the site on behalf of the UK government.

Following the completion of decommissioning, the site will enter into a period of care and maintenance.

Notice of application to dismantle and decommission Hinkley Point B

An application and Environmental Statement has been submitted by EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Limited to the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in accordance with the Nuclear Reactors (Environmental Impact Assessment for Decommissioning) Regulations 1999 (herein referred as EIADR). This is submitted with the intention that it provides relevant information to ONR to enable the granting of consent to carry out the dismantling and decommissioning of the Hinkley Point B Nuclear Power Station (Nuclear Site Licence No. 62C).
