Background
Heysham 1 is made up of two advanced gas-cooled reactors and is similar in design to Hartlepool. Construction for Heysham 1 started in 1970 and electricity generation started in 1983.
EDF have recently communicated their decision to extend the generating lifetime of the station to March 2026, subject to an adequate demonstration of safety.
