The Office for Nuclear Regulation can confirm that Sellafield Limited has complied with the requirements of an improvement notice served in January 2025.
The enforcement action was taken after an inadequately-secured railway wagon at the Cumbria site rolled approximately 60 metres along the track before colliding with a stationary wagon.
Although nobody was injured, the incident presented significant potential risk to personnel involved in shunting operations.
Since the notice was issued, Sellafield Ltd has put in place suitable and sufficient arrangements to allow risks to be appropriately managed and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
This has included making substantial improvements to the planning, organisation, monitoring and review processes of arrangements to protect personnel directly and indirectly involved in rail activities on the site.
The notice was served under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Regulation 5(1).
