Sellafield Ltd has successfully complied with an improvement notice served in June 2025, following the detection of an unintentional release of lead oxide at the First Generation Magnox Storage Pond (FGMSP).
While not a radioactive substance, lead oxide can be harmful if ingested, inhaled or absorbed.
Since the notice was issued, Sellafield Ltd has implemented measures to ensure that lead shielding sheets used in the FGMSP facility are properly maintained and in working order, and that regular visual inspections are conducted.
After examining the evidence provided by Sellafield Ltd, the Office for Nuclear Regulation is satisfied that appropriate action has been taken in response to the notice.
The notice was served under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Sections 2 and 3, and the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002, Regulation 8(1)(a).
