The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has notified Balfour Beatty Group Limited that it will be prosecuted for a health and safety offence following a worker fatality at a nuclear licensed site.
The charge relates to an incident which occurred at AWE plc's Aldermaston site in West Berkshire on 6 July 2023.
A 58 year old male construction worker from East London died after sustaining fatal injuries.
The prosecution relates to alleged breaches of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 Section 2(1), and 3(1).
The decision to begin legal proceedings follows an investigation into the incident by ONR, the UK’s independent nuclear regulator.
The incident was a conventional health and safety matter, and there was no radiological risk to the public.
Court proceedings are now underway, with details of the first hearing to be confirmed when available.
As legal proceedings are active, ONR will not be providing further comment on the case at this time.
