EDF complies with improvement notice

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) can confirm that EDF has complied with an improvement notice served following a health and safety incident at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station.

The enforcement action was taken after an EDF employee sustained hearing damage after opening an incorrect valve that released high-pressure and high-temperature steam during maintenance activities on 14 May 2025.

There was no risk to nuclear safety, the public or the environment from the incident.

Mike Webb, ONR's Joint Head of Operating Reactors, said: “Since issuing the improvement notice we have worked closely with EDF.

“We are satisfied that they have completed the necessary requirements of the notice to implement safety measures to reduce the risk to workers from potential health and safety risks associated with the boilers and pipework.”

ONR issued the improvement notice under The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Section 2(1) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, Regulation 12(1).
