ONR response to government's Nuclear Taskforce interim report

We note today’s publication of the nuclear regulatory taskforce's interim report and its initial findings and preliminary recommendations.

We welcome the report's positive stakeholder feedback that our regulation is effective and on our clear and well-evidenced commitment to nuclear safety, security, safeguards standards. We are also pleased that the importance of our independent role is highlighted along with our proactive and transparent engagement with stakeholders.

The UK’s goal-based regulatory framework is praised for its adaptability and the sector’s ability to innovate in nuclear safety is a potential strength. The report notes that UK regulators are widely regarded as experts in their field with their transparency, proactive engagement with stakeholders, and active international collaboration highlighted as key strengths.

We recognise the taskforce’s early identification of some regulatory challenges amid the current growth of the nuclear sector and will further develop our enabling approach to ensure we regulate proportionately.

Mike Finnerty, our Chief Executive and Chief Nuclear Inspector, said: “Our discussions with the taskforce have been extremely productive. We will continue to work with the team, providing further requested regulatory expertise, to help inform the final report in a way that supports innovation.”

Our mission is to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations and we are aligned with government priorities for nuclear growth and energy security.

We continue to work hard to add demonstrated value to the industry in this ever more dynamic operating environment to enable the safe and timely delivery of nuclear projects without any unnecessary regulatory burden.
