The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has signed a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to clarify responsibilities when radioactive materials are being transported by rail.
The MoU defines and documents ONR and ORR's roles and responsibilities and develops a shared and collective understanding between the regulators about their mutual communication, liaison, collaboration and working arrangements. It pledges appropriate mutual support between the two regulators.
ONR regulates the safe and secure transport of radioactive material via road, rail and inland waterways in Great Britain. ORR is the independent safety and economic regulator for Britain’s railways.
The MoU was signed by Mark Foy, ONR's Chief Nuclear Inspector and Richard Hines, the ORR’s HM Chief Inspector of Railways.
Mark said: “Working with other national regulators is important for ONR as it allows us to learn from each other and to share good practice.
“I look forward to strengthening our relationship with ORR and cooperating on matters of mutual interest to our organisations.”
Richard said: “The MoU with the Office for Nuclear Regulation signifies our joint commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and security in the transport of radioactive materials by rail, ultimately serving to protect the public and the environment.”
