Two companies have rectified shortfalls in the international transport of high-activity sealed radioactive sources.
In December, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) served an improvement notice on Reviss Services (UK) Ltd, a provider of gamma radiation technology services, and Transrad SA, a radioactive and nuclear transport carrier.
This occurred after ONR inspectors established Transrad SA, based in Belgium, had been transporting radioactive material throughout 2024 to and from Reviss’s UK headquarters without obtaining the correct regulatory permission.
Transrad was found to have unsuitable radiation risk assessment and did not properly consult a Radiation Protection Advisor. Given Transrad's actions, ONR judged that Reviss had not followed legislation as the contracting organisation.
Both companies have now complied with the improvement notices following collaborative engagement with ONR in recent months.
There were no consequences to the public or the environment as a result of these shortfalls.
The enforcement action was issued to Transrad under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 Regulation 8 and to Reviss under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009, Regulation 5.
Nick Blackburn, Principal Inspector from ONR's Transport Competent Authority, said: "Both companies have engaged with us professionally and positively and gone further still to see if any learning can be translated into their operational activities.
"We welcome their proposals to look at improvements in their wider systems and assessment of their business against relevant good practices."
