Dungeness B Nuclear Power Station decommissioning plans

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is inviting comments on a scoping report submitted by EDF under the Nuclear Reactors (Environmental Impact Assessment for Decommissioning) Regulations (EIADR).

The scoping report sets out how EDF plan to assess the environmental impacts of decommissioning Dungeness B Nuclear Power Station in Kent.

What is the scoping report?

The EIADR requires the environmental impact of decommissioning nuclear power stations, and other nuclear reactors, to be considered in detail before consent for the decommissioning project to commence can be granted by ONR.

The scoping report is part of the pre-application process. It describes EDF’s proposed approach to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) — the process used to identify and evaluate how the decommissioning work could affect the environment.

In response to the scoping report, ONR will provide a Pre-Application Opinion (PAO) to EDF which will provide guidance on the scope and level of detail of the information to be provided in connection with the proposed EIADR consent application.

ONR will take consultation responses into consideration in its PAO.

ONR welcomes comments from both stakeholders and members of the public. To request documents referenced in the submitted materials but not included in the application, please email eiadr@onr.gov.uk.

How your comments will be used

All comments received will be anonymised — individual names will be removed — before being shared with EDF.

Unless you specifically request otherwise, the name of your organisation will be included. Anonymised comments will also form part of our Pre-Application Opinion report.

This scoping report has been submitted under the Nuclear Reactors (Environmental Impact Assessment for Decommissioning) Regulations 1999 (as amended).
