Hunterston B

Hunterston B is a nuclear power station situated in North Ayrshire, Scotland. It has operated since 1976 and it has been announced that from 7 January 2022 the station will cease generating and start defuelling. Defuelling of both reactors is expected to take three to five years.

Hunterston B is operated by the licence holder EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Ltd, a subsidiary company of EDF Energy plc.

On completion of defuelling and demonstration that the two advanced-gas reactors are fuel free, the holder of the nuclear site licence will transfer to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority who will be responsible for the decommissioning of the Hunterston B site.
