Executive summary

Date(s) of inspection:

  • January 2024

Aim of inspection

The aim of this inspection was to examine Sizewell A's compliance against LC32 and 34, which concern accumulation of waste, and leakage and escape of radioactive material. This inspection was  conducted jointly with the Environment Agency.

Subject(s) of inspection

  • LC32 - Accumulation of radioactive waste - Rating: Green
  • LC34 - Leakage and escape of radioactive material and radioactive waste - Rating: Green

Key findings, inspector's opinions and reasons for judgement made

I judged the adequacy of the NRS Ltd.'s Sizewell A site arrangements and their implementation against the expectations associated with Licence Condition (LC) 32 (Accumulation of Radioactive Waste) and 34 (Leakage and Escape of Radioactive Material and Radioactive Waste). The inspection targeted the waste facilities on site that are responsible for sorting, segregating and packaging waste that accrues on site, prior to despatch offsite for disposal.

Sizewell A has a mature set of arrangements for both LC32 and 34, and I was content that they are being implemented adequately on site. Waste arisings are tracked adequately from creation through to transfer offsite for disposal. I saw evidence of good housekeeping of waste facilities, and labelling of waste packages was clear and consistent.

Conclusion

Overall, from the evidence I sampled during the course of this inspection, I consider that NRS Ltd has adequate arrangements for minimising accumulation of radioactive waste and the prevention of the leakage and escape of radioactive material and waste. I consider that a rating for LCs 32 and 34 of green (no formal action) to be warranted for this inspection.
