Nuclear Associates

The role of the Nuclear Associate is primarily to provide technical support to our inspectors in managing, planning and carrying out their regulatory duties with day to day administrative support provided by the programmes' business support teams.

Targeting support to inspection activities is intended to allow increased technical expertise to be directed to the core regulatory functions exercised by our inspectors while promoting the development of the Nuclear Associate.

About the role

Role objectives

To support in the planning for and conduct of compliance inspections and permissioning activities on UK Nuclear Licensed sites, and in respect of local authorities emergency plans.

To support planning and organising meetings, including preparing comment and briefing material, provide technical information for internal use where appropriate.

Management of timely ONR response to permissioning requests, organisation of specialist inputs to permissioning work and preparation/assembly of supporting information.

Information gathering

To attend appropriate meetings, including visits to licensed sites, gather relevant information on technical, regulatory and operational activities, review licensee's documents, and produce appropriate summary reports.

Cross-programme work

To undertake cross-programme work to ensure consistency and improvement in areas that underpin the work of the organisation. For example:

  • licensing and permissioning assessment
  • compliance inspection
  • permissioning inspection
  • enforcement management
  • regulatory process development
  • issues management
  • inspector guidance.

Other activities relating to the delivery of effective regulation such as management of Operational Experience Feedback (OEF) information into programme thinking, analytical input to strategic thinking, management of analysis and research/support associated with regulatory effectiveness, risk and issues management.

To provide additional technical understanding to other support functions.

Authority and accountability

  • Liaise as necessary with sites in order to carry out defined duties.
  • Authorised to commission support work
  • Accountable and line managed by Head of Unit (or new equivalent) or appropriate Nuclear Inspector
