Nuclear safeguards

ONR's role from 1 January 2021

ONR is now the safeguards regulator, and operates the UK State System of Accountancy for, and Control of, Nuclear Materials.

The transitional provisions set out in Schedule 4 of the Nuclear Safeguards (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 (NSR2019) came into force at 2300 GMT on 31 December 2020. 

If you have safeguards reporting duties, you should have received all the information you need on how to proceed, but please do contact us for any clarification.

Over the next few weeks, we will update these pages to reflect the new domestic safeguards regime, but if you have reporting duties and have any questions, please contact your site inspector/s, or email the team at UKSO@onr.gov.uk or by post to ONR Safeguards, 4N3 Redgrave Court, Merton Road, Bootle L20 7HS.

What are nuclear safeguards?

Nuclear safeguards are measures to verify that countries comply with their international obligations not to use nuclear materials from their civil nuclear programmes to manufacture nuclear weapons.
