Executive summary

Purpose of Intervention

The purpose of this inspection was to check compliance with Ionising Radiations Regulation 2017 (IRR17) at the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR).

During the inspection we held discussions with managers, supervisors, operators and contractors to obtain evidence to assure ourselves of the level of compliance. We sampled relevant documentation and inspected a number of areas on site to see how the arrangements were applied at the point of work. We assessed compliance against:

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

A number of areas of good practice observed at the site and some minor opportunities for improvements were identified.

We requested that LLWR take action to amend the layout of their change-rooms to require washing before exit monitoring in line with relevant good practice. Site accepted this finding.  Progress with this matter will be monitored through future routine regulatory interactions.

Conclusion of Intervention

Based on the evidence from the inspection we are satisfied that LLWR has adequate arrangements in place to comply with IRR17.

There are no findings from this inspection that could significantly undermine nuclear safety.
