Executive summary

Purpose of Intervention

This was a planned inspection at the Imperial College Consort Reactor Licensed Site, Ascot to inspect the licensee’s compliance with their arrangements made under Licence Condition (LC) 32 – Accumulation of Radioactive Waste.

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

The Consort Reactor is in the final stages of decommissioning.  The reactor fuel and the majority of the radioactive components have been safely removed from the site.  The remainder of the decommissioning and site clearance activities are being carried out by a specialist contractor under the control and supervision of the licensee.

This inspection targeted the licensee’s management of radioactive waste created during the removal of the reactor biological shield and other low and very low level waste streams.

Explanation of Judgement if Safety System Not Judged to be Adequate

Not applicable.

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

From the evidence presented during the inspection I am satisfied that the radioactive waste created by decommissioning activities is being adequately managed by the licensee.

Conclusion of Intervention

My conclusion from the findings of the inspection is that the licensee is carrying out the accumulation of radioactive waste in accordance with its arrangements made under Licence Condition 32, which are adequate.
