Conduct Inspection in support of IIS

Executive summary

Purpose of intervention

In line with the 2015/16 inspection plan for Dounreay I carried out planned inspections and other interventions to provide confidence that Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd. (DSRL) is controlling its hazards properly and complying with its statutory obligations.

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

I undertook compliance inspection against Licence Condition 7 Incidents on Site. I had a number of other interventions to judge progress on site and met with Managing Director Designate.

Explanation of Judgement if Safety System Not Judged to be Adequate

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

My Licence Condition 7 inspection included following up the findings and actions resulting from investigations undertaken by DSRL into reported events. I also discussed the findings from an event reporting data trending exercise.   I was of the opinion that incidents were being adequately investigated and that the trending exercise was a positive step that could be built upon to support initiatives to improve reporting culture and learning.

Commissioning of the LLW super-compactor is progressing and design work is continuing on the proposed store conversion for interim storage of ILW.

Conclusion of Intervention

The intervention did not identify any matter impacting on nuclear safety that required immediate regulatory action.
