Radiological Protection Inspection – Reactor 4 Statutory Outage at Hinkley Point 'B'

Executive summary

Purpose of intervention

This intervention record records inspection findings against Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 in support of Nuclear Generation Limited’s (the Licensee) reactor vessel man-entry for Hinkley B Power Station periodic reactor outage.

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

The following Licensee compliance matters were considered during this intervention:

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

My intervention didn’t reveal any radiological protection issues that required immediate action by the Licensee or follow-up by ONR.  However, the Licensee was notify of the need to improve the local exhaust ventilation performance at its solid low-level waste (LLW) sorting cabinet and to improve the segregation of solid LLW within temporary storage areas set up during the conduct of the statutory outage;  these matters will be followed up in writing with the Station’s management in due course.

Conclusion of Intervention

From a radiological protection standpoint, I was content with the Licensee’s current state of readiness and preparation for its vessel entry programme and for the completion of its other scheduled statutory outage maintenance and inspection work.

There were no specific recommendations at the time of writing this report.
