Sizewell B Planned Inspection

Executive summary

Purpose of Intervention

The purpose of this intervention was to undertake Licence Condition (LC) compliance inspections at EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Ltd's (NGL's) Sizewell B power station, in line with the planned inspection programme of the Operating Facilities Operating Reactors sub-programme intervention plan for 2017/18.

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

During this intervention, I undertook a series of introductory meetings and general inspections to familiarise myself with the station and the personnel. There were no LC inspections undertaken during this intervention. I also met with safety representatives and INA evaluators for a monthly information exchange.

Explanation of Judgement if Safety System Not Judged to be Adequate

No system inspection was undertaken during this intervention.

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

I met with the lead safety representative and industrial safety engineer to discuss matters of worker safety, HESAC (Health and Safety Committee) initiatives and a basis for future interactions.

I met two of the station's three INA evaluators to:

I met with various station managers for introductory discussions and to help me get better familiarised with departmental structures, priorities and challenges

I met with the Nuclear Safety Group Head (NSGH) for an introductory discussion and to discuss ways of future working:

The intervention was performed in line with ONR's guidance requirements (as described in our technical inspection guides) in the areas inspected.

Conclusion of Intervention

There are no specific conclusions arising from this intervention in view of my focus on familiarising myself with the station and its personnel.
