Planned inspection at the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) licensed nuclear site

Executive summary

Purpose of Intervention

This was one of a planned series of inspections undertaken at the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) licensed nuclear site in 2017/18. This inspection examined compliance with LC 17, the management system, and LC6, document and record management arrangements.

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

The objective of the inspection was to determine the adequacy of LLWR arrangements and their implementation against ONRs regulatory expectations and relevant good practice, and in particular targeted the supply chain management arrangements for the procurement of nuclear safety related items or services. I was satisfied that the objective set for this inspection was met.

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

I consider the LLWR arrangements for compliance with LC6 and LC17 in the areas examined have been effectively implemented on the Drigg site. However, one shortfall was identified and this will be recorded and monitored as part of routine regulatory business.

LLWR was also informed of some minor areas for improvement and agreed to take actions to address these.

Conclusion of Intervention

I have concluded that the LLWR overall management system, document and record management arrangements are broadly adequate. One issue was identified as an aspect of the current arrangements that can be improved during the LC17 Inspection. LLWR has agreed to take action to address the identified shortfall.
