This inspection was carried out following a report to ONR of an increase in the site perimeter radiation dose. The inspection was conducted jointly with the Environment Agency to inspect the licensee’s arrangements to control radiation levels at the perimeter and within the licensed site.

As no safety system inspection was undertaken, this was not applicable to this intervention.
During the inspection we assessed the adequacy of the licensee’s Radiation Protection arrangements and conducted an inspection of the Metals Recycling Facility to see how the licensee implemented these arrangements at the point of work. We considered that the arrangements within the Metals Recycling Facility process area were adequate however in the container park area a number of areas for improvement to control dose rates within the licensed site and at the site perimeter were identified. Therefore, overall compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 was judged to be below the required standard.
