Planned inspection at AWE Aldermaston

Executive summary

Purpose of intervention

This report covers a planned inspection at the AWE Aldermaston Licensed Site and was undertaken in accordance with ONR’s Integrated Intervention Strategy (IIS) for the Atomic Weapons Establishment Programme.

The inspections undertaken at the Aldermaston Licensed Site form part of a series of planned interventions in accordance with the IIS and Integrated Intervention Plan (IIP).  The purpose of the interventions was to undertake an inspection of compliance with Licence Condition (LC) 28, Examination, inspection, maintenance and testing, (EIMI) as planned in the weapons inspection plan.

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

The intervention was performed in line with ONR's guidance requirements (as described in our technical inspection guides) in the areas inspected.

ONR conducted a planned inspection and assessment of implementation of Licence Condition (LC) 28, Examination, inspection, maintenance and testing.  During this intervention I met with the licensees personnel and inspected their compliance with LC 28 within a decommissioning facility.

Explanation of Judgement if Safety System Not Judged to be Adequate

This was not a Safety System Inspection.

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

The licensee was able to demonstrate appropriate measures are being used to manage and control EIMT under LC 28 in the areas sampled.  Records showed maintenance had been completed and suitable arrangements had been used to withdraw equipment from use and maintenance when appropriate.

Conclusion of Intervention

Based upon the evidence I sampled during the inspections I judged that there was no need for regulatory action and a rating of green was appropriate for the intervention.
