Executive summary

Purpose of intervention

This report covers planned inspections at AWE Burghfield Licensed Site and is undertaken in accordance with ONR’s Integrated Intervention Strategy (IIS) for the Atomic Weapons Establishment Programme.

The inspections undertaken at the Burghfield Licensed Site form part of a series of planned interventions in accordance with the IIS and Integrated Intervention Plan (IIP).

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

The intervention was performed in line with ONR’s guidance requirements (as described in our technical inspection guides) in the areas inspected.

ONR conducted a planned inspection and assessment of arrangements established in respect of the Licence Condition (LC) 32 Accumulation of Radioactive Waste at the Burghfield Nuclear Licensed Site.

ONR also conducted a planned inspection and assessment of implementation of the Licence Condition (LC) 34 Leakage and Escape of Radioactive Material and Radioactive Waste at the Burghfield Nuclear Licensed Site.

Explanation of Judgement if Safety System Not Judged to be Adequate

Not applicable during this intervention.

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

For the LC 32 compliance inspection, based on the sample inspected in respect of the established arrangements for Accumulation of Radioactive Waste, ONR concluded that the arrangements were adequately implemented.

For the LC 34 compliance inspection, based on the sample inspected in respect of the established arrangements for Leakage and Escape of Radioactive Material and Radioactive Waste, ONR concluded that the arrangements were adequately implemented.

It was ONR’s opinion that the inspection of Accumulation of Radioactive waste and Leakage and Escape of Radioactive Material and Radioactive Waste met the expectations of ONR’s guidance and that it was evident that the site had an example of continuous improvement, therefore ONR judged that the rating for this inspection should be adequate.

Conclusion of Intervention

It was ONR’s opinion that of the sample inspected against LCs 32 and 34 that the licensee is adequately implementing the established arrangements within the Assembly Technology Centre.

There are no other findings from this inspection that could significantly undermine nuclear safety.
