AWE Aldermaston, Fire Alarm and Detection System Inspection

Executive summary

Purpose of intervention

ONR raised a Regulatory Issue in 2014 regarding the failure of AWE to maintain fire alarm and detection systems in two facilities, following which AWE committed to the following by 31 October 2015:

Following AWE’s written confirmation that these commitments had been met, ONR decided to sample two facilities and hold a discussion with the fire safety authority to gather evidence that these commitments had been satisfied and that the issue could be closed.

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

This intervention was carried out in order to test the licensee’s arrangements regarding the maintenance of fire alarm and detection systems and to provide evidence to ONR as to whether the associated Regulatory Issue should be closed.

Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

Two facilities were sampled at the AWE site. The evidence provided at the two facilities gave ONR confidence that the associated Regulatory Issue could be closed. The licensee was advised to carry on with the initiatives which are now in place as part of their response to this issue and ensure that remaining improvements are driven to completion. 

Conclusion of Intervention

Based on the inspections carried out at site, the evidence provided and the various discussions which took place over the two days, ONR are content that the associated Regulatory Issue relating to the maintenance of fire alarm and detection systems can now be closed.
