ONR's strategy highlights the importance of our international work. Our vision to be 'Universally respected for securing confidence in nuclear safety and security' can only be achieved by active engagement with international and European institutions and other national regulators.
The UK is committed to raising standards of nuclear safety and security. It has therefore signed up to, and is bound by a number of European and international agreements designed to ensure high levels of nuclear safety globally. As a result, work undertaken by organisations such as the European Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can have a direct bearing on the way we regulate in the UK. It is therefore important that we work closely with them to ensure that any new policies or international standards can be incorporated into our regulatory system effectively and efficiently.
As part of its work to enhance nuclear safety, security, safeguards and radioactive transport in the UK and internationally, ONR participates in a number of European and international forums and works closely with overseas regulators. Where this involves sharing technology and information, the UK puts in place bilateral and formal information exchange agreements.
