Technical report - Overview of knowledge coverage for geological disposal

As part of our role in regulating a geological disposal facility (GDF), ONR needs to be able to review and challenge the developer of any facility, so that we can ensure any proposed future facility meets our rigorous safety standards.

To help us do this, ONR contracted AMEC to produce a research needs document to provide both us and the Environment Agency with an independent view of questions that could be asked during the development of a GDF and compare and contrast these with work performed internationally.

As the report was not a review of the activities of the NDA Radioactive Waste Management Directorate (now known as Radioactive Waste Management Limited (RWM), they were not involved in the production of the report or the review of work completed.

RWM published their own detailed Science and Technology Plan in September 2014, which provides the public and stakeholders with information relating to their planned research and development activities and which addresses many of the questions raised in this report.
