The Civil Nuclear Security and Safeguards (CNSS) division is responsible for approving security arrangements within the civil nuclear industry and enforcing compliance to prevent the theft or sabotage of nuclear or other radioactive materials, the sabotage of nuclear facilities, taking into account the full spectrum of protective measures, including physical protection, personnel security, cyber security and information assurance.
Through the CNSS division, ONR regulates the security of:
- nuclear and other radioactive materials on civil licensed nuclear sites;
nuclear materials off licensed sites; - domestic transport of nuclear materials by road, rail and sea; and
- international transport of nuclear and other radioactive materials by UK flagged vessels
sensitive nuclear information wherever it is held.
It does this in accordance with the Nuclear Industries Security Regulations (NISR) 2003, and the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017.
